Printable graph paper that prints true to size
Pick a square size, get a PDF. Every sheet carries a measuring bar in the bottom margin, so you can put a ruler on it and prove your printer didn't shrink the page — which, by default, most of them do.
Your printer is probably shrinking the page
Most print dialogs default to fitting the page inside the printer's hardware margin, which scales everything down by roughly 4 to 6 percent. On a 5 mm grid that turns every square into 4.7 mm. It is small enough to go unnoticed and large enough to ruin a scale drawing, a knitting chart, or a floor plan. Change this one setting before you print.
Chrome / Edge
Open More settings, find Scale, switch it from Default to Custom and type 100.
Adobe Acrobat
Under Page Sizing & Handling choose Actual size. Do not leave it on Fit or Shrink oversized pages.
Safari / macOS Preview
Expand the dialog, set Scale to 100%, and make sure Scale to Fit is unchecked.
Firefox
Open More settings and set Scale to 100 instead of Fit to page width.
Paper must match
Printing a Letter PDF onto A4 forces a resize no matter what the scale box says. Pick the paper you actually have loaded.
Phone printing
Mobile print flows usually scale without asking and give you no control. For anything you intend to measure, print from a computer.
How to check it worked: lay a ruler on the two bars at the bottom of the sheet. The upper one must read 100 mm and the lower one 4 inches. If both are short by the same proportion, the page was scaled — fix the setting and print again. No other free graph paper tells you this, which is why so many printed grids are quietly wrong.

Why doesn't my printed graph paper measure correctly?
Almost always print scaling rather than the file. Printers cannot print to the very edge of a sheet, so print dialogs shrink the page to fit inside that hardware margin, typically by 4 to 6 percent. The setting is on by default in most browsers and it is applied silently.
The measuring bars on every sheet here exist to catch exactly this. If the metric bar reads 96 mm instead of 100, your page was scaled to 96 percent and every square is 4 percent small.
What is the difference between graph paper, grid paper and quad paper?
They describe the same thing. Quad paper is the common US name for a square grid, usually 1/4 inch. Graphing paper and squared paper are used interchangeably elsewhere. Millimetre paper normally means a 1 mm grid with heavier lines every 5 or 10 mm.
Should I choose A4 or Letter?
Choose whichever is loaded in your printer. A4 is standard in Europe, Asia, Australia and most of the world; Letter is standard in the US and Canada. Printing one onto the other forces a resize that the scale setting cannot prevent, because the sheets are genuinely different shapes.
Is it free, and can I use it for work?
Yes to both. There is no signup, no watermark and no limit on how many sheets you generate. The PDFs are plain vector line work and you are free to use them for schoolwork, client work or anything else.
Why is the file so small?
The PDF is drawn as vector lines rather than an image, so a full sheet is only a few kilobytes. It also means the grid stays perfectly sharp at any zoom level and prints at your printer's full resolution instead of whatever a picture happened to be saved at.
Can I get a size that isn't listed?
Yes. Type any number into the custom size field and switch the unit between millimetres and inches. The sheet is rebuilt as you type, and the preview always shows exactly what the PDF will contain.
